When planning high-impact corporate events, venue choice can set the initial tone, but custom venue design creates a lasting impression. While traditional physical venues come with set layouts, decorative limitations, and structural boundaries, event marquees offer an entirely different proposition because they are an absolute blank canvas.
Designing bespoke corporate marquees allows brands, charities, and organisations to craft fully customised immersive environments. Through tactical spatial planning, clever internal marquee partitioning, and tailored lighting and decor, a flexible temporary structure can be transformed into an unforgettable, high-end experiential event space.
Transforming temporary structures into experiential venues
A marquee is more than just shelter, they are – quite literally – a canvas, waiting to be tailored to your brand’s specific storytelling and guest journey.
Key elements that elevate a standard marquee into a bespoke event environment include:
- Internal partitions: Room divisions allow you to split a single structure into distinct functional zones, such as an arrival breakfast or reception spaces to grand dining halls and auction rooms
- Custom lighting: Strategic architectural and atmospheric lighting helps establish shifting moods throughout the day, drawing focus to key brand elements, staging, or surrounding features
- Seamless interior-exterior transitions: Using features like transparent sidewalls bridge the gap between indoor luxury and outdoor heritage landscapes
Case study: The Duke’s Challenge 2025 at Hulne Abbey, Alnwick Estate
A project we’ve worked on which puts this into practice is the prestigious Duke’s Challenge 2025, hosted by the Duke of Northumberland in support of the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT), the UK’s leading independent wildlife research charity.
Held within the historic, dramatic ruins of Hulne Abbey on the Alnwick Castle Estate, the high-profile charity event welcomed approximately 170 distinguished guests and raised an unprecedented £685,000.
To host an ambitious day combining field sports, luxury hospitality, and fundraising, the temporary venue layout had to accommodate a multi-stage flow without interrupting the guest experience:
- Guests arrived at Hulne Abbey for breakfast and orders for the day within an inviting, structured welcome pavilion
- Teams proceeded across the Alnwick Castle Estate for five challenging clay shooting stands
- Guests returned to the main marquee complex for a drinks reception, followed by an exquisite three-course game-themed lunch and a live auction
By blending high-end temporary structural design with the ancient stone backdrops of Hulne Abbey, the event achieved a striking contrast between rustic estate heritage and contemporary luxury hospitality.
With production, styling, and catering support from top-tier event partners, including Wise Productions, Options Great Hire, Liquid Bars, Flowers Unlimited, and The Potted Lobster, the marquee space provided:
- Seamless flow: Allowing guests to transition effortlessly from active outdoors to refined dining
- Brand & sponsor visibility: Subtly integrating prestigious sponsors, including Barbour, Knight Frank, and Hawkstone, into a cohesive luxury ecosystem
- Atmosphere: Providing acoustic and climate control while framing the historic surroundings of the Alnwick Estate

Key takeaways for event planners
When designing bespoke corporate marquees for high-profile client gatherings or charity galas, keep these core principles in mind:
- Design around the flow: Use internal partitioning to create distinct ‘reveals’ as guests move from one phase of the event to the next
- Respect and leverage the surroundings: Position structures to highlight natural landscapes or historic architecture through clear walls
- Partner with production experts: Work alongside specialised lighting, decor, and structural teams to ensure brand guidelines translate flawlessly into temporary architectural spaces
